2012 INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAY: HELPING BOYS AND MEN LIVE LONGER, HAPPIER, AND HEALTHIER LIVES
In 2012, the critical state of affairs of Boys’ and Men’s Health is moving Men and Women in more than 60 nations to focus the world’s attention on “Helping Boys and Men Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier Lives.” Global and Regional Coordinators for 2012 International Men’s Day (www.international-mens-day.com), which will be observed on Monday, 19 November 2012 under the theme “Helping Boys and Men Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier Lives”, are urging individuals and institutions throughout our global village to create, share, implement, and sustain initiatives which will aggressively and effectively address the unique health issues of Boys and Men.
Founded in 1999 by Jerome Teelucksingh, Ph.D., the Chairman of the International Men’s Day Coordination Committee, a global think tank and faculty member in the History Department at the University of West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, International Men’s Day celebrates and honors the contributions and selfless sacrifices that Men make to our families, our communities, and our world. It shares a 48-hour partnership with Universal Children’s Day which is celebrated on 20th November of each year and is endorsed by the United Nations.
Five (5) components for “Helping Boys and Men Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier Lives” have been identified by the International Men’s Day Global Team:
BOYS’ HEALTH: Would the eradication of hunger and poverty help boys live longer, happier, and healthier lives? How do we ensure that boys receive a daily regimen of healthy meals and exercise? Do boys have equal access to health education and health awareness programs, resources, and support services? Why is it that boys are 50% more likely to be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and placed on Ritalin than their female counterparts? Many boys are misdiagnosed with ADD. What collaborative steps should be taken by parents, educators, and health care professionals and providers to reduce the incidence of ADD in boys and eliminate the need for boys to be prescribed psychotropic medications which can provide long term damage to their physical and intellectual development?
LIFE EXPECTANCY: What steps can be taken to improve the quality of life for Boys and Men? Prostate cancer, heart disease, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and diabetes are diminishing the quality of life for Men and shortening the years they have to spend with their children and spouses. Would legislative initiatives that increase medical research and medical research funding help to reduce the mortality rate for men and improve the quality of life for both Men and Boys? Why is it that in a number of countries, for example, the United States, women are outliving men by between approximately 5 to 6 years?
MENTAL HEALTH: To what extent does poverty, gender discrimination, lack of equal access to educational and economic opportunities and resources, and adequate and equal access to medical resources and support services contribute to debilitating mental health issues for Men and Boys? Are there adequate “male-friendly” mental health resources and support services for Men and Boys? Is there a societal bias against Boys and Men who suffer from depression and/or are diagnosed with “clinical depression”? What effective initiatives can and should health care professionals and providers, communities, social service professionals and providers, and the Fatherhood and Men’s Movement Community design, share, implement, and sustain which would substantially reduce the suicide rate for Boys and Men; create equal access to mental health resources and support services; and work collectively to eradicate the causes of depression in Boys and Men?
THE POSITIVE IMPACT OF FATHERHOOD ON BOYS’ AND MEN’S HEALTH: Caring fathers are important to ensure their sons and daughters are emotionally and physically healthy. Men must encourage their sons to eat properly, exercise regularly and be free of stress. Good fathers and husbands will produce healthy families who will contribute to a healthy neighbourhood and healthy nation. How important is it to put aside financial resources for your health? An investment in health is the wisest investment for men and boys.
THE IMPACT OF VIOLENCE ON MEN’S AND BOYS’ HEALTH: Too often we hear, read and see tragic incidents of men and boys being affected by violence. Governments must ensure that violence is reduced or eliminated to ensure there is a healthy environment for their citizens. Men and boys who serve as soldiers or are in conflict zones lose their lives and limbs. Some are psychologically and emotionally scarred due to the trauma of war and violence. Do we need this violence? Should the money being invested in wars and weapons be invested in health?
Feel free to contact the International Men’s Day Coordination team at www.international-mens-day.com to share your thoughts on “Helping Boys And Men Live Longer, Happier, and Healthier Lives”. This year we are giving out a prize certificate for the IMD FLAGSHIP PROJECT which illustrates the best solution-oriented approach to one or more of the five areas listed above.
